Four Wave FC Players Compete in Concacaf W Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 19, 2022) – Four San Diego Wave Fútbol Club players competed in the 2022 Concacaf W Championship on Monday Night at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico. Forward Alex Morgan scored the game-winning goal to secure a championship victory for the U.S. Women’s National Team. All four players are expected to return to San Diego Wave FC later this month to resume training ahead of the team’s road match against Chicago Red Stars on July 30.

Defender Naomi Girma, midfielder Taylor Kornieck and forward Alex Morgan all represented the USWNT, while goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan stood in the net for the Canada Women’s National Soccer Team. Morgan and Sheridan both started the match, while Girma entered in the 88th minute and Kornieck during stoppage time.

The United States came out of the gate pressuring Canada with attack, but Sheridan stepped up to deny many of the USWNT’s chances through the full 90 minutes. In the 78th minute, Morgan came face-to-face with her San Diego Wave teammate and scored the decisive penalty kick goal that earned the USWNT a berth in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

San Diego Wave FC continues to fight for a playoff spot in its inaugural season and has sat consistently on top of the NWSL standings since Week One with a record of 6-3-3 (W-L-D). Forward Alex Morgan leads the league in the Golden Boot race with 11 goals in 10 regular-season matches, a single-season career best for the Southern California native.

After three matches without key international players, San Diego Wave FC intends to have a fuller roster to take on the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, July 30 at 5 p.m. PT. Wave FC’s next home match at Torero Stadium is on Sunday, Aug. 7 versus the Kansas City Current.
