Van Egmond Assists Second Goal in Australia’s 2-0 Takedown over Denmark
San Diego Wave FC midfielder Emily van Egmond and the CommBank Matildas have advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 defeat over Denmark on Monday morning at Stadium Australia.
Van Egmond recorded an assist and her third start of the World Cup, playing 80 minutes in total. The Australian midfielder joins club teammate Sofia Jakobsson and Sweden in the Quarter-Finals after their defeat of the USWNT in penalties on Sunday.
Caitlin Foord opened the scoring against Denmark in the 28th minute off a first-half counterattack goal. In the 70th minute, van Egmond received the ball from Mary Fowler inside the box and then played the ball back to Hayley Raso, who fired it home for the decisive goal of the match.
Van Egmond and the Matildas head to Brisbane to face either France or Morocco this Saturday, August 12, at 12.00 a.m. PT. Jakobsson and Sweden will kick off in the Quarterfinals on Friday, Aug. 11, against Japan at 12:30 a.m. PT.
