San Diego Wave FC forward Sofia Jakobsson has advanced with Sweden to the Semi Finals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Sweden defeated Japan 2-1 on Friday morning as the team continues to fight for a chance at its first World Cup title.

Jakobsson made her fourth appearance of the tournament, subbing on in the 84th minute following a two-goal lead from Sweden. Amanda Ilestedt scored first in the 32nd minute, slamming her fourth goal of the tournament home following a free kick. In the 49th minute, Sweden’s Filippa Angeldal doubled the scoreline from the penalty spot due to a Japan handball decision. Japan followed up with a late-match goal in the 87th minute from Honoka Hayashi, for a final score of 2-1.

Sweden will meet Spain on Tuesday, August 15, at 1:00 a.m. PT to decide who will advance to the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday, August 20, at Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

Notes:

  • This will be Sweden’s fifth team appearance in a World Cup Semi Final. Forward Sofia Jakobsson played in the World Cup Semi Finals with Sweden in both 2011 and 2019.
  • Jakobsson has recorded two assists this tournament, as well as recording Sweden’s only shot on goal against the USA in the Round of 16.
  • San Diego Wave midfielder Emily van Egmond and the Matildas will face France this Saturday, August 12, at 12.00 a.m. PT. in the Quarterfinals.
