Wave FC’s next match at Torero Stadium is on Friday, July 15th vs. Racing Louisville FC

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 9, 2022) – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (6-2-3) faced off with Angel City FC (4-4-2) on Saturday evening in a Southern California rivalry matchup at Banc of California Stadium. The two NWSL newcomers battled it out and kept fans on the edge of their seats until the last minute of stoppage time, with San Diego Wave FC ultimately falling 2-1. A goal from midfielder Kristen McNabb put San Diego on the board tonight and stole Angel City’s chance at a clean sheet.

After several minutes of give-and-take to start the match, the home side got on the board first in the 9th minute as Angel City’s defender Ali Riley slid in a shot from a difficult tight angle on the right side of the box off an assist by Jun Endo.

Wave FC’s first corner kick of the night came in the 40th minute but was headed out quickly by Angel City. San Diego then earned a free kick in the 45th minute which midfielder Abby Dahlkemper stood over and sailed the ball over the Angel City wall, bruising the crossbar and just nearly missing a goal.

In the 60th minute, San Diego’s Kristen McNabb evened up the score with her first goal of the 2022 regular season, beating the Angel City keeper with a perfect slot from the right, putting Wave FC back in the game.

After scoring, Wave FC continued picking up the pace and nearly doubled their score in the 63rd minute, but the shot went just right of the goal. In the 79th minute, Angel City’s Tyler Lussi received a red card from a foul during a San Diego scoring opportunity, leaving the home side to compete with 10 players the remainder of the match.

Angel City FC doubled its score in the 81st minute as Claire Emslie was left open, catching goalkeeper Carly Telford off guard with a ball to the left of the net.

Wave FC looks to get back on track back home at Torero Stadium on Friday, July 15th against Racing Louisville FC. July 15th is also the Commemoration of Title IX’s 50th Anniversary presented by Plinqit (watch on Paramount+).
