San Diego Wave FC announced today that international midfielder Sofia Jakobsson will join the Sweden Women’s National Team for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. It will be the fourth FIFA World Cup for the midfielder, who has 144 caps and 23 goals for Sweden, including four goals in FIFA World Cup matches.
Jakobsson joined the San Diego Wave ahead of the club’s inaugural season in 2022, making her NWSL debut on May 1, in a 1-0 win against Houston Dash in the first game of the regular season. She’s since appeared in 28 matches (19 starts) for San Diego, while earning three goals and four assists over the course of the 2022 and 2023 NWSL regular season.
At the international level, Jakobsson has represented Sweden since 2011, earning her first cap in May and being named to the 2011 FIFA World Cup roster later that year. Then eight summers later in the 2019 FIFA World Cup, Jakobsson had her best World Cup performance. In the quarterfinals, she scored the game-tying goal after Germany took an early lead over Sweden, helping secure the first victory over Germany in a major tournament since the 1995 World Cup. The midfielder then tallied the game-winning goal in the third-place match against England. For both efforts, Jakobsson was named the FIFA Player of the Match.
Sweden was sorted into Group G of the 2023 FIFA World Cup along with South Africa, Italy and Argentina. Jakobsson and her teammates will kick off group play against South Africa at 10:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, July 22, at Wellington Regional Stadium. Sweden will then face Italy at 12:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, July 29 at Wellington Regional Stadium, before closing out the group stage against Argentina at 12:00 a.m. PT on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at FMG Stadium Waikato.
