San Diego Wave Fútbol Club announced today that the club has acquired the rights to England international goalkeeper Carly Telford via transfer with Chelsea FC. Telford will join Wave FC pending receipt of her International Transfer Certificate and P1 visa.

Telford, 34, is a mainstay on the England national team having been named to the 2007, 2015 and 2019 World Cup rosters. Additionally, in 2019 Telford played a key role in winning the 2019 SheBelieves Cup for England playing in two of their three matches against Brazil and Japan. Her stellar play helped lead to Telford’s selection to Team Great Britain for the Tokyo Olympics.

At the club level, Telford began her career at Sunderland, in her native North-East, and Leeds United before signing for Chelsea in 2011. She captained Chelsea in the 2012 FA Cup final and returned to the club in 2017 where she’s played the last four seasons in the Women’s Super League (WSL). Telford was part of the Chelsea team that won the WSL and the Continental League Cup in the 2020/21 campaign. Last season, Telford also took up a part-time coaching role for the club, supporting the Blues Under-16 and Under-18 goalkeepers.

“I am very pleased with the signing of Carly Telford,” said Wave FC head coach Casey Stoney. “I know Carly well and know exactly what she will bring both on the pitch and in our environment. She is a talented, experienced international that will add real strength to our goalkeeping unit. I am looking forward to working with Carly to see what we can achieve together.”
