San Diego Wave FC announced today that the club has acquired defender Kaitlyn Torpey from Melbourne City FC of the A-League in exchange for an undisclosed fee. The defender has signed a two-year contract through the 2025 season. Torpey will join Wave FC pending receipt of her International Transfer Certificate and P1 visa.
“Kaitlyn is a talented young defender and has a bright future ahead of her with the Wave,” said San Diego Wave FC General Manager Molly Downtain. “She’s a fantastic addition to our strong group of defenders, and is a great fit to what we are building in San Diego, and we are excited to welcome her to the club.”
Torpey, 23, spent three seasons with Melbourne City where she started in 44 matches (45 starts), logging six goals and five assists as a defender. She was named to the PFA’s A-League Team of the Season for her breakout performance in the 2022-2023 season. Prior to her time with City, the Australian international spent five seasons with the Brisbane Roar of the W-League. In eight seasons, making her professional debut at age 16, Torpey has appeared in 82 games, earning more than 7,000 minutes in the A-League.
Internationally, Torpey has represented the U-17, U-19 and U-23 Australian Women’s National Team. Torpey was most recently named to the Australian U23 Women’s National Team roster for matches against Scotland.
Torpey will occupy an international slot on the Wave’s 2024 roster.
