San Diego enters Friday’s match unbeaten across all competitions against Utah with a 5-0-0 record since 2022. The most recent meeting between the two sides resulted in a 2-1 win for the Wave at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, on March 22, 2026. San Diego opened the scoring when Ludmila forced a mistake from the Utah backline, allowing Dudinha to intercept the ball and finish the chance for the Wave’s first goal of the 2026 season. Utah equalized in the 67th minute when Lara Prašnikar volleyed a shot toward the far post. The Wave continued to apply attacking pressure in the final minutes, with Kimmi Ascanio and Kenza Dali combining to play a first-time ball into the path of rookie Lia Godfrey, who took a touch before calmly slotting the ball into the net to secure the 2-1 victory on the road.

Last Time Out:
The Wave is coming off a 1-1 draw against Denver Summit FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday, Aug. 14. San Diego opened the scoring through 18-year-old Melanie Barcenas, who showcased her footwork to cut inside the attacking third, beat multiple defenders and send a low-driven strike into the bottom corner. Denver equalized after halftime when a cross from Janine Sonis found the head of Yazmeen Ryan, who directed the ball on frame. Forward Adriana Leon found the back of the net late for the Wave, but the goal was ruled offside and neither side was able to find a game-winner.

Utah enters Friday’s match following a 3-2 victory over Bay FC at home. Bay FC opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Utah responded one minute later to level the match. The Royals regained the lead in the 22nd minute through Narumi Miura, but Bay FC again found an equalizer in the 29th minute through Heather Gilchrist. The score remained level until the 79th minute, when Mina Tanaka converted a penalty kick to secure the win for Utah and set a new club record with 36 points through 11 wins.

Players to Watch:
Barcenas has played a key role in San Diego’s attack this season, scoring her fourth goal of the year in the Wave’s last match. The goal was a signature finish from Barcenas, showcasing her footwork before finding the back of the net to surpass her single-season scoring record and move into the lead for goals by a teenager in the league this season.

Cloé Lacasse has been at the center of Utah’s attack in 2026, recording six goal contributions over her last five games. A three-assist performance two weeks ago highlighted a 5-1 victory over Portland Thorns FC, while her 14 combined goals and assists in 2026 are tied for third in the league entering Friday.
