The Southern California rivalry kicks off in 2023 with San Diego Wave FC (2-1-0, 6 points) heading to BMO Stadium to take on Angel City FC (1-1-1, 4 points) on Sunday, April 23. Kickoff in Los Angeles is slated for 5:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on FOX 5 San Diego and streamed on Paramount+.

This will mark the fifth overall match between the two Southern California clubs, with two regular season and two Challenge Cup games taking place in the inaugural season for both teams. San Diego won two of the four meetings between the two clubs, with both wins coming in San Diego (D1 L1). In total, the clubs combined for 12 goals, however, only Wave forward Alex Morgan has scored more than one goal in the series.

Sunday’s matchup follows a Wednesday match for both teams as the league kicked off the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup. Angel City is coming off a loss to OL Reign, with Seattle taking the 2-0 win. In regular season play, Angel City earned a 2-2 draw against Racing Louisville FC on Saturday night. Down 2-0 to start the match, Los Angeles put together a two-goal comeback to earn the point at home.

Meanwhile, the Wave are coming off another home victory as San Diego beat Portland Thorns 1-0 in the Challenge Cup kickoff match. Prior to that, Wave FC are coming off their first loss of the regular season after a last-minute goal gave OL Reign the 1-0 victory at Lumen Field on Saturday. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan had a standout game in the net, with four saves, including back-to-back saves to keep the game level in the final minutes of regulation.
