San Diego Wave FC defender Kaitlyn Torpey and midfielder Emily van Egmond have been named to the CommBank Matildas roster for Round 3 of the Asian Qualifiers for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024. This marks Torpey’s first-ever senior national team call-up. 

Australia will take on world number 47, Uzbekistan, in a two-match home-and-away series on 24 February 2024 at Tashkent’s Milliy Stadium (8.00pm AEDT), before returning to Australia for the final Asian Qualifier on 28 February 2024 at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium (8.00pm AEDT). The winner of the series will be one of the Asian Football Confederation’s two representatives at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. 

Torpey, 23, was just announced as the latest Wave FC signing this week. She spent three seasons with Melbourne City where she started in 44 matches (45 starts), logging six goals and five assists as a defender. She was named to the PFA’s A-League Team of the Season for her breakout performance in the 2022-2023 season.

Van Egmond, 30, was originally acquired ahead of the Wave’s inaugural season in a trade with the Orlando Pride on Jan. 18, 2022. In two seasons with San Diego, the Australian international has made 35 appearances (34 starts), while accumulating two assists. Since joining the NWSL in 2018, van Egmond has appeared in 62 matches (54 Starts). The Australian international has competed in four World Cups and has appeared in over 100 matches for her country. 


San Diego kicked off preseason training last week. The Wave open the 2024 season on the road on Friday, March 15 against Gotham FC in a Challenge Cup match on Amazon Prime. The regular season for the club kicks off on March 23 at Snapdragon Stadium against Kansas City Current at 7:00 p.m. PT. Single-game tickets for the 2024 season are currently on sale here
