USA to Face Sweden in Knockout Stage on Sunday, August 6

San Diego Wave FC midfielder Sofia Jakobsson recorded her second assist of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this morning against Argentina, helping Sweden lock in the top spot as Group G winners with a 2-0 win. With the result, the USA will now take on Sweden on Sunday, August 6, at 2 a.m. PT for their first knockout stage match.

Jakobsson’s assist came with Sweden’s opening goal from Rebecka Blomqvist in the 66th minute. After receiving the ball from Hanna Bennison on the right, Jakobsson crossed the ball into the box, slipping it behind the Argentina backline where an unmarked Blomqvist headed it into the goal from close range.

Jakobsson played 76 minutes against Argentina before being replaced by midfielder Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. Argentina conceded a foul shortly after, and in the 90th minute, Sweden’s Elin Rubensson stepped up to the spot and converted her penalty kick for a final score of 2-0.
