Sweden takes on Spain Tuesday at 1:00 a.m. PT; Australia faces England Wednesday at 3:00 a.m. PT
San Diego Wave FC midfielder Emily van Egmond (AUS) and forward Sofia Jakobsson (SWE) have both advanced to the Semifinals of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with their respective national teams. Jakobsson and van Egmond are two of three remaining NWSL players left in the running for the 2023 World Cup title.
Jakobsson and Sweden meet Spain on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 1:00 a.m. PT to decide who will advance to the final. Van Egmond joins host country Australia as they play their first-ever World Cup Semifinal against England on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 3:00 a.m. PT. Both semifinals will take place at Stadium Australia in Sydney and will be broadcast live on FOX and Telemundo.
In quarterfinal action this past weekend, Sweden defeated Japan 2-1 on Friday morning as the team continues to fight for a chance at its first World Cup title. On Saturday, van Egmond and host country Australia defeated France in a historic penalty shootout, coming out on top seven to six.
Following the semifinals, the 2023 FIFA World Cup Final will take place on Sunday, Aug. 20, kicking off at 3:00 a.m. PT from Stadium Australia.
Notes:
- Sofia Jakobsson (SWE) and Emily van Egmond (AUS) are two of only three NWSL players left in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Racing Louisville FC’s Alex Chidiac is the third and will join Australia at the Semifinal.
- Emily van Egmond joins the Matildas for their historic first-ever World Cup Semifinal. Van Egmond has scored one goal and recorded one assist in the four starts during the 2023 World Cup.
- This will be Sweden’s fifth team appearance in a World Cup Semifinal. Forward Sofia Jakobsson played in the World Cup Semifinals with Sweden in both 2011 and 2019. Jakobsson has recorded two assists this tournament, as well as recording Sweden’s only shot on goal against the USA in the Round of 16.
