San Diego Wave FC announced today that goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan will join the Canada Women’s National Team for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. It will be the second FIFA World Cup for the goalkeeper, who has 35 caps and 17 clean sheets for her country.
Sheridan joined the San Diego Wave ahead of the club’s inaugural season in 2022, where she earned 2022 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year. The 27-year-old has appeared in 38 matches (38 starts) for San Diego while recording 104 saves and 13 clean sheets over the last two regular seasons.
Internationally, Sheridan has represented Canada since 2016, making her debut on March 7 at 20 years of age. Sheridan earned a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as Canada defeated Sweden in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw. Since taking over Canada’s starting goalkeeper position in 2022, Sheridan earned the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, allowing only one goal in five appearances.
Canada was sorted into Group B of the 2023 FIFA World Cup along with the Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, and Australia. Sheridan and her teammates will kick off group play against Nigeria at 7:30 p.m. PT on Thursday, July 20, at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Canada will then face Ireland at 5:00 a.m. PT on Wednesday, July 26 at HBF Park, before closing out the group stage against Australia and her Wave teammate Emily van Egmond at 3:00 a.m. PT on Monday, July 31 at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.
