San Diego Wave FC (6-3-2, 20 points) are coming home sitting in first place as they prepare to take on Angel City FC (2-6-3, 11 points) this Saturday, June 17, at Snapdragon Stadium. The match will air on CBS with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. PT.
San Diego’s all-time record versus Angel City is a winning 2-1-0 (W-L-D). The Wave and Angel City met twice in the 2022 regular season, and each team came out with a win. In their first regular season meeting, San Diego and Los Angeles were tied 1-1 until the 81st minute when Angel City scored, ending the game in a 1-2 loss for the Wave on the road.
Nearly two months later, San Diego played their first-ever match at Snapdragon Stadium on Sept. 17 to a sold-out crowd of 32,000 fans versus Angel City. Forward Jaedyn Shaw scored in the 30th minute of the match which ended up being the game-winner for the Wave, resulting in a 1-0 shutout at their new stadium.
The two teams have met once in the 2023 regular season on April 23rd, when the Wave shut out Angel City 2-0 in Los Angeles with goals coming from Sofia Jakobsson in the 70th minute and Makenzy Doniak in the 75th minute.
Angel City is coming off of a 1-2 loss on Saturday against the Washington Spirit with LA’s goal coming from Mary Alice Vignola in the added minutes of the first half. Vignola’s goal was assisted by Claire Emslie, making this her third assist of the season.
San Diego is sitting in first place in the league standings for the first time this season. The Wave faced Racing Louisville at Lynn Family Stadium on Friday where the match ended in a scoreless draw of 0-0. This match marked San Diego’s fourth straight road shutout, making them the third team in league history to record four consecutive road clean sheets.
Heading into Saturday’s match, the Wave return home to face their upstate neighbors once again and look to stay undefeated at home when playing their in-state rivals.
