San Diego Wave FC forward Sofia Jakobsson and the Sweden women’s national team fell to Spain 2-1 on Tuesday morning, ending their run in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
With this 2-1 victory, Spain has reached the World Cup final for the first time.
Both sides struggled to get on the board, competing to create opportunities until the late minutes of the match. Sweden forced the Spain keeper to make several saves throughout but was unable to get on the board just yet. The action started in the 81st minute as Salma Paralluelo came off the bench for Spain and scored on the team’s first shot on goal of the match.
Sweden then leveled in the 88th minute with a header from Rebecka Blomqvist, her third goal of the tournament. A little over a minute later, Spain’s Olga Carmona scored the game-winner and clinched their spot in the final, ricocheting the ball off the bottom of the cross bar and into the net.
