San Diego Wave midfielder Sofia Jakobsson and the Sweden Women’s National Team earned a 2-1 victory over South Africa at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.
After falling to South Africa in the 48th minute, Sweden leveled the match in the 66th minute. In the 90th minute, Amanda Illestedt found the net for the Swedes to score a later winner to secure the 2-1 win.
Sweden will play Italy at Wellington Regional Stadium for their second group stage match on Saturday, July 29 at 12:30 a.m. PT, before closing out the group stage against Argentina on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 12:00 a.m. PT at FMG Stadium Waikato.

- Four players for the Wave at the World Cup – Naomi Girma (USA), Sofia Jakobsson (SWE), Alex Morgan (USA), Emily van Egmond (AUS) – earned opening match wins in the World Cup group stage rounds. All five Wave players and their national teams are still undefeated after the opening matches with Kailen Sheridan (CAN) drawing against Nigeria.
