San Diego Wave FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and the Canadian Women’s National Team earned a 2-1 comeback victory over the Republic of Ireland at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Wednesday morning and moved into first place of Group B.
Sheridan made five saves to help preserve Canada’s first win of the World Cup, stopping five out of the six shots she faced.
The Republic of Ireland’s Katie McCabe opened the scoring in the fourth minute on an Olimpico, directly from a corner kick. Late in the first half, an Ireland shot was redirected by Megan Connolly for an own goal equalizer, bringing the score to 1-1.
Canada’s Adriana Leon scored the match winner eight minutes into the second, assisted by Sophie Schmidt. After receiving Schmidt’s precise pass into the box, Leon held off a defender to put it past goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan.
Canada will now face the co-hosts Australia in the group finale in Melbourne on Monday, July 31.
