San Diego sets sights on selling out Snapdragon stadium

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (August 23, 2022) – As of this morning, San Diego Wave Fútbol Club has officially sold more tickets than the NWSL attendance record for a single game with over 27,000 tickets sold for its September 17 home opener. With less than a month until the historic home opener against Angel City FC, the club now sets its sights on shattering the record with a complete sell out of Snapdragon stadium.

“This is a remarkable moment for our club, San Diego, and women’s professional sports in our country. We are so proud to be a part of such a supportive community and we cannot wait to sell the whole place out.”

Jill Ellis, Wave FC President

The current record, 25,218, is held by Portland Thorns, set in 2019 at Providence Park in a match against the North Carolina Courage. Wave FC has also surpassed the tickets sold of OL Regin’s record of 27,248, which was a MLS double-header against the Courage in 2021 at Lumen Field.

“This is a testament to two things: women’s soccer in the U.S. and the San Diego Wave and what we’re building here. This game is so significant for us being in our first season, knowing that the NWSL has gotten more and more fans each year, that there has been more and more traction, that there is more and more value in women’s sports and women’s soccer specifically.

“So to see this number today, right now, and just know that we are on the road to a sell out is just an incredible feeling because this club set its mind on breaking the single-game attendance in league history. We’ve done that now, but now the goals don’t stop for this club and I’m just really proud to be a part of that.”

Alex Morgan, Wave FC Forward

Starting with an electric atmosphere and top-notch game day experience at the new cutting-edge stadium, San Diego Wave FC aims to become the new standard for professional sports. The legendary opening night will be filled with entertainment, community and a free one-of-a-kind So-Cal-themed Boardwalk Fest outside Snapdragon stadium, starting at 3:30 PT and featuring local food, live music, art installations, games, prizes and more. Wave FC welcomes supporters from all over Southern California and beyond to experience world-class soccer and a vibrant fan community in San Diego.

One of the most exciting parts of Wave FC’s sell-out campaign is the Battle of the Clubs, which gives any club in the area a chance to compete by selling tickets to the Sept. 17 match. The organization with the most tickets sold will win a trophy presented by Jill Ellis and an exclusive training session with the club coaching staff at the San Diego Wave FC training fields.

San Diego Wave FC continues fighting for a playoff spot in its inaugural season and has sat consistently near the top of the NWSL standings since Week One, an amazing feat for an expansion team. Forward Alex Morgan is leading the NWSL Golden Boot race with 12 goals in 14 regular season matches, while she has one of the best seasons of her career here in San Diego.
