San Diego Wave FC announced today that the club has signed defender Naomi Girma to a new contract. Girma, who originally signed with the Wave after being the first overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, is now under contract with the club through the 2026 season*.
“Naomi has been an integral piece of the Wave’s success on and off the field since she joined the club. She has proven that she is one of the top players in this league, and we are thrilled to have her continue to lead our club. Securing her long-term future was a priority for the club, and we are pleased that we were able to reach this agreement as we know Naomi will play a crucial role in the Wave for years to come.”
Molly Downtain, San Diego Wave FC General Manager
Girma was the first player drafted in Wave history when she was selected in the 2022 NWSL Draft. In her rookie campaign, Girma made 27 appearances (27 starts) while playing every single minute for all matches she was available for the Wave. She registered 176 recoveries and led all league defenders in possession while earning 2022 NWSL Rookie and Defender of the Year honors, becoming the first in league history to secure two individual end-of-year awards in a rookie season. In 2023, Girma has played in 11 regular season games (11 starts) as a central defender.
“The start to my professional journey has been so rewarding here in San Diego. Since being drafted, everyone at the Wave has made San Diego feel like home. My goal has always been to win championships for this city and raise the trophies with my team. I can’t wait to play in front of the Sirens and fans for years to come.”
