Wave FC now accepting 2022 season ticket deposits providing fans a chance to catch Morgan in action during the club’s inaugural season
SAN DIEGO (Dec 13, 2021) – In one of the most high-profile deals in NWSL history, San Diego Wave Fútbol Club announced today the signing of the world-renowned forward Alex Morgan from Orlando Pride. The prolific goal scorer and inventive playmaker makes the move back to Southern California, where she grew up and began her trailblazing career, and will make an immediate impact for the franchise both on and off the field.
Morgan, 32, hails from San Dimas, Calif. and returns to her home state where she joins the blossoming Wave FC roster that includes American international Abby Dahlkemper and former Orlando Pride teammate Jodie Taylor. Morgan’s impact on the global game and within the NWSL is undeniable. In the inaugural 2013 season, she led the Portland Thorns FC to capture the first championship in league history.
“We are thrilled to have a player of the caliber of Alex Morgan both on the pitch and in our locker room,” said Wave FC head coach Casey Stoney. “Alex is a proven goal scorer at the very highest level and her world class ability, mentality and competitiveness will only add to our ability to compete in this league. I am excited to work with Alex and to see what this team can achieve.”
In her decorated career with the U.S. National Team, Morgan has netted 115 goals in 190 appearances. She also played a key role with the USA securing the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup titles, being named to the Dream Team for both tournaments and winning the Silver Boot in 2019. Among other international soccer accolades, Morgan was the 2012 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year and a 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year Finalist. A testament to her leadership, Morgan co-captained the U.S. from 2018-2020.
“This is an incredibly special moment for our club, our fans, and our community to welcome Alex and her family to San Diego,” added Club President Jill Ellis. “She is an extraordinary person, a great talent and a leader on and off the field.”
“As a Southern California native, I am excited to be making a long-term commitment to Wave FC and the city of San Diego,” said Morgan. “I am coming home to partner with this ambitious new club and to push the league forward for generations of soccer players to come. I cannot wait to get started and I will do everything I can to help bring a championship to this great city.”
