Southern California native joins the Wave after being selected 12th overall in the NWSL Draft
SAN DIEGO (Feb. 8, 2024) – San Diego Wave FC announced today that the club has signed 2024 NWSL Draft pick Kennedy Wesley (1st round, 12th overall) to a two-year contract.
“Kennedy is a versatile and talented defender that had an outstanding career at Stanford,” said San Diego Wave FC General Manager Molly Downtain. “We had Kennedy highly rated heading into the draft and when the opportunity presented itself, selecting her was an easy decision for the club. Throughout preseason we’ve been impressed with her performance and she has seamlessly fit into the group already. We look forward to her continuing to progress within our system and take herself to the next level.”
Wesley, 22, was a defensive mainstay for perennial powerhouse Stanford University, where she finished her collegiate career as the all-time leader in matches played (104) and ranked ninth in games started (92), starting the final 60 matches of her career. A two-year captain, Wesley led the Cardinals to an NCAA Championship in 2019 and Pac-12 Championship in 2019 and 2022.
On the international stage, Wesley has been a part of the U-17 and U-20 U.S. Youth National Teams. She was a part of the U-17 roster that competed at the 2016 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the U.S. U-20 WNT that won the Concacaf Championship.
