San Diego Wave FC announced today that midfielder Emily van Egmond will join the Australia Women’s National Team for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. It will be the fourth FIFA World Cup for the midfielder, who has 127 caps and 30 goals for the Commbank Matildas.

Van Egmond joined the San Diego Wave ahead of the club’s inaugural season in 2022, making her NWSL debut on May 1, in a 1-0 win against Houston Dash in the first game of the regular season. She’s since appeared in 33 matches (30 starts) for San Diego while earning one goal and two assists over the course of the two seasons.

At the international level, van Egmond has represented Australia since 2010, earning her first cap at just 16 years of age and being named to the 2011 FIFA World Cup roster later that year. In the 2011 World Cup, van Egmond scored the second goal for Australia to help her country take a 3-2 win over Equatorial Guinea. Since then, van Egmond has competed in both the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups, as well as in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Van Egmond earned her 100th cap for the Matildas on June 10, 2021, becoming the eighth woman to reach the milestone for Australia.

Australia was sorted into Group B of the 2023 FIFA World Cup along with the Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, and Canada. Van Egmond and her teammates will kick off group play against Ireland at 3:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, July 20, at Stadium Australia.
