Striker tallied three goals and two assists in 2022
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2022) – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club has announced the return of forward Makenzy Doniak for the 2023 NWSL season by exercising a mutual contract option.
“I’m really glad Makenzy has dedicated her future here at the Wave. She had an incredible season for us, making a huge difference when she started and also when she was a game-changer. She changed many-a-game, and we’re really glad she has dedicated her future here.”
Casey Stoney, San Diego Wave FC Head Coach
Doniak was acquired by San Diego via multi-player trade with the Chicago Red Stars ahead of the 2022 NWSL draft; the trade also included Kelsey Turnbow and Katie Johnson. In the 2022 season, Doniak played eighteen matches and made five starts, accounting for 735 minutes played for San Diego. The striker tallied three goals, and dished two assists in the 2022 season.
After her decorated collegiate career at the University of Virginia, Doniak was drafted by Western New York Flash in the 2nd round of the 2016 NWSL College Draft and went on to help win the 2016 NWSL championship as a rookie. Doniak then moved to the North Carolina Courage the following year and played in the 2017 NWSL final. The forward most recently was a Chicago Red Star, where she scored three goals over 18 games (seven starts) for Chicago in the 2021 season.
“I’m so excited to re-sign with the Wave for another year and continue to contribute to this team’s success and development. I’m honored to represent this city and can’t wait to play in front of our amazing fans again!”
