San Diego Wave FC announced today that General Manager Molly Downtain will depart the club on April 15.
“I began discussing my future with Jill Ellis last month and after an amazing three years with the Wave, I’m ready for a change and I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges,” said San Diego Wave FC General Manager Molly Downtain. “Since day one, I’ve tried to always do what was best for the club, the players and this city and I am grateful to ownership and Jill for the support and opportunity to bring this roster to life. The foundation that has been laid and built is something I’m beyond proud of. The direction that this club is heading is exciting and I wish the team, staff and fans the very best of luck.”
Downtain was named as the first General Manager in San Diego Wave history in July 2021. Under Downtain, the Wave signed U.S. Women’s National Team stars Alex Morgan and Abby Dahlkemper, along with Canadian National Team goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, before selecting Naomi Girma, the current USWNT Player of the Year, with the first overall pick in the NWSL Draft. Additionally, the club became the first NWSL expansion club to make playoffs in its inaugural season and followed that with the Wave’s first trophy – the NWSL Shield – in San Diego’s second season of play.
“Molly’s dedication and unwavering commitment to our club helped solidify San Diego Wave FC as a force in this league from day one,” said San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis. “We are incredibly grateful for Molly’s valuable contributions and the foundation she has laid. On behalf of the club I extend my heartfelt thanks to Molly and wish her the best in her future endeavors.
Downtain joined the club after working at U.S. Soccer for six years, working closely with the coaching staff to oversee all team operations and staff management. Downtain was part of the USWNT in 2019 that won the World Cup trophy.
