SAN DIEGO (May 10, 2024) – San Diego Wave FC (3-3-1, 10 points) host NJ/NY Gotham FC (3-2-2, 11 points) at Snapdragon Stadium this Sunday, May 12 for AAPI night, presented by Mostra Coffee. The match will be broadcast on ION with kickoff slated for 4:30 p.m. PT. Tickets for the match are available here.
This will be the first regular season meeting between San Diego and Gotham FC, but the two teams previously met on March 15 when the Wave, the 2023 NWSL Shield winners, defeated Gotham, the 2023 NWSL Champions, 1-0 in the Challenge Cup final. San Diego has won all five of its matches against Gotham FC, marking the Wave’s longest winning streak against a single opponent and equaling Gotham’s longest losing streak against a single opponent in all NWSL competitions.
Last Time Out
In San Diego’s last match, the Wave defeated Utah Royals 2-0 on Wednesday to earn their third straight regular-season home win for the first time in club history. In the 33rd minute, forward Jaedyn Shaw scored the first NWSL penalty of her career and her 11th professional goal for Wave FC. Forward Makenzy Doniak doubled the lead in the 77th minute when she received a perfectly paced ongoing ball from Shaw and took a first-time left-footed shot that found the far post corner to secure her second goal of the season. San Diego has scored in all 15 of their regular-season home matches since the beginning of last season, the only team in the NWSL to do so.
NJ/NY Gotham FC is coming off a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash on Wednesday night. Gotham FC got on the board early when defender Jenna Nighswonger sent a direct ball into the box that found the feet of forward Ella Stevens but her shot was blocked by Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell, ultimately falling to a wide-open Lynn Williams who finished the chance and secured the game-winning goal in the eighth minute.
Players to Watch
19-year-old Jaedyn Shaw created a night of personal records on Wednesday against the Utah Royals. The goal-scoring opportunities marked the first time Shaw has both scored and assisted in a match. The goal took her total scoring contributions to 15 in the regular season (11 goals, 4 assists), moving ahead of Olivia Moultrie (14) for the most by a teenager in NWSL history. Shaw is also the second-youngest player to take (and score) a regular-season penalty in NWSL history.
Forward Lynn Williams has scored in back-to-back matches for Gotham FC and is now tied with forward Esther González (2) as the club’s leading goal scorer this season. Williams also led Gotham FC’s scoring in 2023 by scoring eight goals and she came in second with assists (3). The game-winner against Houston marked Williams’ 78th in all NWSL competitions, tying Sam Kerr for the most in league history.
