San Diego Wave FC returns from a bye week and will resume regular season action on Saturday, August 19, to face NJ/NY Gotham FC at 5:00 p.m. PT at Snapdragon Stadium.
The squad will be joined by new Wave signing, forward Kyra Carusa, who is available for Saturday’s match. Carusa returns to her hometown of San Diego after a stint with the London City Lionesses and following her first World Cup with the Republic of Ireland.
In the Wave’s previous match, San Diego earned a draw against Angel City FC 1-1 in the club’s final match of the 2023 NWSL UKG Challenge Cup. The Wave opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an unassisted goal from midfielder Jaedyn Shaw. The 18-year-old intercepted the ball from an Angel City defender inside the box and ripped a left-footed shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net. Angel City responded five minutes later as Scarlett Camberos shot from long range and found the top right corner to level the match.
Gotham FC is coming off of a 1-1 draw against the Orlando Pride in their final match of the UKG Challenge Cup. Midfielder Meleana Shim scored the equalizer for Gotham in stoppage time of the second half, making that her first goal since Aug. 5, 2015.
The last time the teams met was at Red Bull Arena on June 4, where the Wave defeated the home team 1-0. San Diego’s Makenzy Doniak was subbed on at halftime and scored within 46 seconds of being in the match.
Alex Morgan has a record of 10 total goals against Gotham FC with the San Diego Wave, and on May 7, 2022, she became the third player in league history to score four goals in a match.
