SAN DIEGO (Aug. 12, 2026) – San Diego Wave FC (10-7-2, 32 points) return to San Diego to host Denver Summit FC (6-7-5, 23 points) at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday, August 14 at Snapdragon Stadium. San Diego will face the expansion side for the second time this season after earning a historic 3-2 comeback victory in their first meeting on April 25. Denver opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Melissa Kössler before Natasha Flint doubled the home side’s lead in the 32nd minute. Rookie Lia Godfrey sparked the Wave’s comeback in the 49th minute after combining with Kimmi Ascanio for the first goal before delivering a corner kick in the 57th minute where Kennedy Wesley powered a header into the net to level the match. San Diego completed the comeback in the 65th minute when Dudinha beat her defender to the end line before delivering a driven cross across goal that was redirected into the net by a Denver defender. 

Last Time Out:
Wave FC is coming off a 1-0 loss on the road to Gotham FC on August 7. both sides creating opportunities. San Diego came close in the 25th minute when Melanie Barcenas slipped Trinity Byars in behind the Gotham defense, but her effort was denied by goalkeeper. Jaedyn Shaw scored in the 44th minute to secure a 1-0 lead by taking a shot from the box that bended towards the far post. 

Denver’s last match was a 2-1 win over the Utah Royals. Janine Sonis opened the scoring after lofting a cross into the box that found Yazmeen Ryan, who took a touch before finishing with a right-footed volley. Utah continued to push for an equalizer, with Tatumn Milazzo finding the back post and sending a shot into the roof of the net in the 89th minute. Sonis then secured the result for Denver in the 94th minute, converting a free kick from the top of the box into the left side netting for the game-winning goal. 

Players to Watch:
Lia Godfrey continued her standout rookie campaign against the Washington Spirit on Aug. 2, scoring her fifth goal of the season and fourth game-winning goal to set a new single-season Club record. The midfielder has emerged as one of the Wave’s attacking threats, while her connection with Trinity Byars has helped fuel San Diego’s recent success. The Wave have also scored a league-high eight goals in the final 15 minutes of matches this season. 

Janine Sonis was directly involved in both of Denver Summit’s goals in the win over Utah on Saturday, assisting on the opening goal before scoring the game-winner in stoppage time. Sonis has recorded 11 goal contributions this season (eight goals, three assists), the third-most by a player in a team’s first NWSL season. Her eight goals this season are the most by any Denver Summit player.
