This will be the fifth all-time regular season meeting between the two sides and the Wave has yet to beat Seattle since the club’s inaugural season, with San Diego holding a 0-4-1 series record. In the last meeting between the two sides, Seattle defeated San Diego in the NWSL semi-final match with a 1-0 score at Snapdragon Stadium. The lone goal came from Veronica Latsko whose cross from outside the box found the back of the net in the 47th minute.

San Diego Wave FC fell to the Kansas City Current (2-0-0, 6 points) at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night. The Wave hosted 32,066 fans in the club’s home opener, setting a new NWSL home opener attendance.

Wave FC midfielder Sofia Jakobsson opened the scoring in the 18th minute, recording her first goal of 2024 and her fourth NWSL career goal. The Current equalized just before halftime with a goal from defender Isabel Rodriguez in the 44th minute. The game-winner for Kansas City was a penalty kick taken by captain Lo’eau LaBonta, who stepped up to the spot and buried it in the 70th minute. Despite outshooting Kansas City 19-14, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on target, and winning the possession battle (66-34), the Wave would be unable to find a late equalizer.

The Seattle Reign (1-1-0, 3 points) are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Chicago Red Stars. Seattle was trailing 1-0 in the match until the 63rd minute when midfielder Ji So-Yun scored off of a volley just outside the box to find the equalizer. Nearly five minutes later, the Red Stars found their game-winning goal from defender Maximiliane Rall who finished a near post shot in the 68th minute.
