After clinching a playoff berth this past weekend, San Diego Wave FC (10-7-3, 33 points) continues its final regular-season stretch on Saturday, Oct. 7, against the North Carolina Courage (8-7-5, 29 points) in Cary, North Carolina. The Wave match is slated to start at 4:00 p.m. PT with the match streamed on Paramount+.
San Diego defeated Portland Thorns FC 2-0 on Saturday for the team’s 10th win of the season. The three points secured the Wave a spot in the 2023 NWSL Playoffs, marking the first in the league to do so this season. The Wave took the lead in the 20th minute through a goal from Kyra Carusa and an on-point assist by Jaedyn Shaw. Shaw collected the ball and cut it back through the Thorns defense to an open Carusa, who fired it to the back post. In the 38th minute, Alex Morgan doubled the lead by scoring her sixth goal of the season. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan also made five saves to record the team’s seventh clean sheet of the regular season.
North Carolina sits fourth in the NWSL standings and picked up a point against OL Reign on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at Lumen Field. OL Reign’s Bethany Balcer was the first to score off a corner kick in the 21st minute. The Courage responded in the 41st minute with an equalizer from Kerolin Nicoli after she beat both the Reign goalkeeper and a defender on the way to the back of the net.
The all-time record between the two clubs sits in the Wave’s favor, as San Diego holds a 2-0-1 record. This will be the second match between the two sides in 2023. The Wave defeated the Courage 3-1 at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, April 1. A brace from Morgan and a goal from Shaw gave the Wave a convincing lead over the Courage, whose lone goal was scored by Kerolin in the 77th minute by a penalty.
