San Diego Wave FC Leadership Team
The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced in June 2021 that San Diego will be home to an NWSL expansion team, set to begin play in Spring, 2022.  Jill Ellis, the only two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winning manager and a former FIFA World Women’s Coach of the Year recipient, serves as President of San Diego Wave FC while England standout and former Manchester United Women’s Manager Casey Stoney, MBE, will serve as the team’s head coach.  Chief Revenue Officer, Vanessa Shay, will oversee revenue streams, marketing, and business operations.  The San Diego Wave FC is owned by investor Ron Burkle.  Burkle has also tapped longtime friend and business associate Matt Alvarez to lead the project on his behalf as Vice Chairman.

About NWSL
The National Women’s Soccer League is a 12-team Division-I women’s professional soccer league featuring national team players from around the world.  The clubs are the Chicago Red Starts, Houston Dash, North Carolina Courage, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns FC, OL Reign, NY/NJ Gotham FC, Kansas City, Washington Spirit, and Racing Louisville FC.  Expansion teams LA Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC will begin play in 2022.  Based in Chicago, the NWSL partners with the Canadian Soccer Association and the United States Soccer Federation.

Women’s Soccer in the US
Women’s sports, specifically soccer, have seen a significant growth, demonstrated by a variety of metrics – including fan interest, media coverage, the overall expansion of teams and the increased investment of ownership groups from other professional leagues.  Deloitte writes, “Women’s sports events have demonstrated their mass-market appeal, and thus monetary potential, on multiple occasions.  In short, women’s sports is ripe for greater monetization.

Director of Human Resources

The Director of Human Resources will manage the San Diego Wave FC human resource operation and oversee the administration of human resource policies, procedures, and practices.  The Director will function as the central contact for information specific to human resource management and the administration of systems which will ensure Wave FC employees are treated fairly, consistently and with dignity and in accordance with California state employment laws

Key Responsibilities   

  • Supports Wave FC leadership by providing guidance, advice, and counsel on human-resource matters as well as risk management assessments.  
  • Oversees full cycle of finalizing job descriptions, recruiting employees, on-boarding of new hires, benefits administration, and off-boarding.  
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage and mentor team members through the process of understanding the role that human resources plays within the club. 
  • Understands cultural norms, traditions, and working with diverse teams.
  • Supports leadership and employee actions by developing and communicating human resource guidelines and leadership development programs that embody Wave FC’s values and communicates those values throughout the club.    
  • Leads Wave FC’s compliance with all existing federal and State of California governmental and employment-law requirements.
  • Drafts office policies, procedures, and protocols for leadership approval and maintains updates and revisions as necessary.   
  • In coordination with club leadership and employee supervisors, manages the annual performance appraisal process. 
  • Documents annual awarded bonus and commissions for all employees in coordination with accounting department for payroll and tax purposes. 
  • Manages the HR team members.
  • Monitors employee time off and leave.
  • Identifies the need for employee training programs required by the NWSL and State of California and coordinates the administration of these virtual training programs/modules.
  • Assists employees with accessing employee benefits.
  • Handles disciplinary processes, performance improvement plans (PIPS), and formal grievances.
  • Works with Wave FC executive team to administer salary structure and employee benefit program.

A candidate should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in HR or business management preferred.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in human resources showing progression in responsibilities. 
  • Two years’ experience in an HR leadership position preferred.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Empathic, calm leadership qualities and ability to navigate sensitive circumstances and information.
  • Proficiency in current technologies to communicate and present information.
  • Business and financial acumen including financial planning, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Strategic and can manage processes and projects.
  • Knowledge of employment law and HR best practices.
