The September international window featured six Wave FC players, representing their respective countries at the senior level, Kyra Carusa (Republic of Ireland), Naomi Girma (USA), Sofia Jakobsson (Sweden), Alex Morgan (USA), Jaedyn Shaw (USA) and Kailen Sheridan (Canada). In addition, Melanie Barcenas represented the U.S. U-17 WNT.
Kyra Carusa – Republic of Ireland
In the Women’s National League opener, Republic of Ireland claimed a 3-0 win against Northern Ireland at Aviva Stadium in front of a record crowd of 35,944. Kyra Carusa netted her third international goal for Ireland, as the Wave forward doubled her countries lead in the 70th minute.
In the second match, Carusa earned the start against Hungary in Ireland’s 4-0 win. Carusa scored a goal in the 49th minute to help secure the three points and lift Ireland to the top of the table.
Naomi Girma, Alex Morgan, Jaedyn Shaw – U.S. Women’s National Team
The U.S. Women’s National Team played South Africa in two matches during the FIFA window. The first match resulted in a 3-0 win for the USA, as defender Naomi Girma and forward Alex Morgan both earned the start. Girma helped secure the shutout, including deflecting a hard hit shot in the 26th minute. Meanwhile, Morgan assisted on a goal to Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman in the 34th minute. The assist for Morgan was the 51st of her career, breaking a tie with Shannon Mac Millon to take sole possession of ninth on the USWNT all-time assists charts.
In the second match against South Africa, the USWNT secured a 2-0 win. Girma and Morgan both earned the start for the USWNT. Morgan linked with Rodman for the second game in a row, marking her team-leading fifth assist of the year. Morgan’s five assists are her most in a calendar year for the USWNT since 2013.
Kailen Sheridan – Canada
Canada faced Jamaica in a home-home series of the Concacaf Olympic Play-In for the Paris Olympics 2024. The first leg of play was hosted at Independence Park in Kingston, Jamaica, as Canada defeated the Reggae Girlz 2-0. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan earned the start for Canada, as she made two saves to secure the shutout.
Sheridan earned the start once again for Canada, as they hosted Jamaica in Toronto at BMO Field. Jamaica went on the board first, but Canada would score twice to earn the 2-1 win. Sheridan earned two saves in the match as the defending Olympic Champions secured their spot at Paris 2024.
Sofia Jakobsson – Sweden
In the opening of their Nations League Group, Sweden battled Spain to a 3-2 loss in part to a late penalty that gave the defending World Cup champions the three points. Midfielder Sofia Jakobsson entered the match with 30 minutes left to play.
For the second match of group play, Sweden traveled to face Italy and earned a 1-0 win. Jakobsson was subbed into the match in the second half and earned her 150th international cap with the appearance.
Melanie Barcenas – U.S. U-17 WNT
The U.S. U-17 WNT hosted Japan in a two-game friendly series in Carson, Calif. during the FIFA window. In the first match, the U.S. defeated Japan 2-0. Wave midfielder Melanie Barcenas wore the captain’s armband and helped the U.S. earn a 3-3 draw in the final game of the series. Barcenas, along with Washington Spirit midfielder Chloe Ricketts, were the first two professional players ever to be called up to the U-17 team.
