Wave FC to host Portland Thorns and Club América
SAN DIEGO (June 12, 2024) – Concacaf has announced the schedule for the 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup Preliminary Round and Group Stage matches. San Diego Wave FC, as part of Group B, will play the Portland Thorns, Club América Femenil, Santa Fe FC, and the winner of the preliminary round match (Vancouver Whitecaps at Alianza Women FC).
The competition’s inaugural edition will feature 11 clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean and be played from August 2024 to May 2025. The W Champions Cup will also be the only path through which Concacaf clubs can qualify for the new FIFA Women’s Club World Cup. FIFA recently announced that the first edition of the Women’s Club World Cup will include 16 clubs and be played between January and February 2026.
San Diego will begin the Concacaf tournament on the road when the club travels to Panama to face Santa Fe FC on Tuesday, August 20 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. PT. The Wave will then host Portland Thorns on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Snapdragon Stadium, before traveling to either Vancouver or El Salvador for a match on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The final match of the group stage will have San Diego hosting Club América Femenil on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
COMPETITION FORMAT
The 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup includes a Preliminary Round, followed by group and direct elimination play. The Preliminary Round will be a single-leg match between Alianza Women and Vancouver Whitecaps, with the winner advancing to the Group Stage.
The Group Stage will feature two groups of five clubs each, with each club playing every club in its group once, for a total of four matches per club (two at home and two away). At the conclusion of Group Stage play, the group winners and runners-up (four clubs in total) will progress to the Finals.
The competition’s Finals, which include Semifinals (1A vs. 2B and 1B vs. 2A), Third-Place Match, and Final, will be played in May 2025 in a centralized venue to be announced.
