San Diego made its 2023 Challenge Cup debut with a 1-0 win over the Portland Thorns on April 19th where the game’s only goal came from a Thorns own-goal in the 65th minute.

In the Wave’s last meeting with the Reign on April 15, 2023, the two teams were tied 0-0 until the added minutes of the second half when the Reign scored in the 95th minute which resulted in a 0-1 loss for San Diego, their first loss of the 2023 regular season.

In the 2022 Challenge Cup, the Wave scored nine goals in six games with a 1.5 goals per game average, the second highest of any club in the competition’s history.

Wednesday will be the sixth encounter between the two teams, with two out of the five games being from last season’s Challenge Cup. The Reign have won all three of their home matches against the Wave while both meetings in San Diego have ended in draws. The Reign are coming off a 4-1 win against Angel City FC at Lumen Field.

Wave forward Alex Morgan has scored all three goals for San Diego against the OL Reign and has been involved in five of the 10 goals San Diego has scored in its NWSL Challenge Cup history (4 goals, 1 assist).

The Wave are coming off their first draw of the season after a 0-0 scoring game until the 86th minute where Sofia Jakobsson scored for the Wave. A late 90th minute goal by the Portland Thorns tied the game making it 1-1 at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday.
