Wave kicked off preseason Monday as team prepares for first full season at Snapdragon Stadium

With the sun shining brightly in SoCal fashion, San Diego Wave FC officially returned to the practice pitch this week at the San Diego Polo Fields in Del Mar.

The club’s second season is steadily approaching with the NWSL campaign kicking off on March 25, and the full schedule expected to be released on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Read below to hear from Head Coach Casey Stoney and forward Kelsey Turnbow as they discuss preseason training and the upcoming 2023 campaign.

Stoney on being back with the team in preseason training:

“It’s great to see them all back in. There’s a great energy about the place and they’re all buzzin’ to be back in. And we start again with new expectations and new standards for us, so we’re setting the scene.”

Stoney on the team’s goals for preseason:

“The goal is to keep improving. We’re not naive. We know we’re only in our second year, but we set our standards last year, and it’s about improving those standards and improving our consistency, working tactically on different things and building new partnerships in the team. We’ve made some new signings, and we’re getting them embedded into the way we play and our principles and philosophies. We’ve got some exciting things planned ahead.”

Turnbow on being back with the team and training:

“It was so great being back. The vibes were immaculate. We’re all just so excited to see each other and see what our hard work in the off season has done for us. We have a great foundation, and we’re ready to work hard and get after it this season.”

Turnbow on what she is most excited for this season:

“We’re so excited to have a full season at Snapdragon. It’s such a great environment to play in, and we’re so excited to see our San Diego Wave fans. They create such a great culture for us, and it helps us get those wins and feel really energized. We’re so proud to play for San Diego and can’t wait to get out there!”
