SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2023) – San Diego Wave FC today announced that Shannon Mac Millan has been named Vice President of Community Relations for the club. Mac Millan will join the Wave full-time following the conclusion of the San Diego Loyal SC season.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the Wave culture and help continue to grow the community efforts the club has made through the first two years,” Mac Millan said. “My life has been dedicated to the game of soccer, and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to give back to the San Diego and women’s soccer community.”
Mac Millan, a native of Escondido, has been part of San Diego Loyal SC from its inception in 2019, first joining as a Senior Advisor and Lead Broadcast Analyst. In 2021, Mac Millan was promoted to Vice President of Community Relations, where she was responsible for bringing the club’s mission and values to life, while fostering relationships with community organizations. Mac Millan helped the Loyal create a meaningful impact off the field, including work with Chicano Federation, YMCA, San Diego Pride, Ronald McDonald House, and Humble Design San Diego.
The former U.S. Women’s National Team player became a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2016. Mac Millan, who appeared in 176 matches for the USWNT, was a member of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning team and holds two Olympic medals, one gold and one silver, from the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. In 2002, she was named the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, leading the USWNT with 17 goals that year.
Mac Millan played three seasons (2001-2003) for the San Diego Spirit in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world’ first women’s soccer league in which all players were paid as professionals.
San Diego’s final regular-season home match is Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Snapdragon Stadium, presented by PNC Bank. The match kicks off at 2:00 p.m. PT, and the first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive an exclusive and one-of-kind Wave basketball jersey. Tickets to the match are available here.
