SAN DIEGO (Sept. 18, 2026) – San Diego Wave FC (14-8-3 45 points) earned a 2-0 win over Kansas City Current (11-9-5 38 points) at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday night, continuing its push for home-field advantage in the playoffs.
Sandra Paños set the tone early, making several important saves as Kansas City applied pressure in the opening minutes. Wave grew into the match and created dangerous chances through Trinity Byars, Melanie Barcenas and Gia Corley, with Byars coming closest after being played through by captain Kenza Dali.
San Diego came out on the front foot after halftime and broke through in the 50th minute. Mimi Van Zanten kept the play alive down the right before Kimmi Ascanio worked the ball to Barcenas, whose cross to the back post was turned in off Laney Rouse for an own goal and a 1-0 Wave lead.
Paños remained composed at the other end, continuing to command her area and preserve the advantage with another key stop in the 79th minute.
Wave sealed the win in the 91st minute. After Gabi Portilho was fouled just outside the box and Laney Rouse was shown a second yellow card, Kenza Dali whipped the ensuing free kick into the area for Kennedy Wesley, who flicked her header into the far corner to make it 2-0.
