San Diego native extends stay with hometown club following breakout 2026 season
SAN DIEGO (Sept. 17, 2026) – San Diego Wave FC announced today that the club has signed forward and San Diego native Melanie Barcenas to a two-year contract extension through 2028.
“Melanie has shown tremendous growth both on and off the field this year, establishing herself as one of the league’s most dynamic young attacking players,” said Camille Ashton, San Diego Wave FC General Manager and Sporting Director. “Her confidence, creativity, and ability to impact games have been evident, and we’re excited to see her continue to develop and play an important role in the future of this club.”
At 18 years old, Barcenas is enjoying a breakout season for Wave FC, scoring six goals, the most by any teenager in the NWSL this season, including two game-winners while adding one assist. She has made 23 appearances (12 starts) in 2026, totaling 1088 minutes in league play and leading the team in shots on target (24). Barcenas tied the league’s single-season record (six) for goals by a teenager, held by Sam Kerr, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, and Emeri Adames, in the club’s 2-1 win over North Carolina on September 12.

Barcenas recorded the first multi-goal contribution match of her career on Aug. 21 against Utah Royals FC, finishing with a goal and an assist. The performance gave her goals in back-to-back matches, following her goal against Denver Summit FC on Aug. 14, while her assist earned NWSL Assist of the Week honors and moved her into the league lead for goal contributions among teenagers in 2026.
The San Diego native has made 57 appearances for her hometown club since 2023, recording eight goals and three assists, with her eight goals ranking sixth in club history. Earlier this season, on July 26, Barcenas became the second-youngest player in NWSL history to reach 50 regular-season appearances, behind only Portland Thorns FC midfielder Olivia Moultrie.
Barcenas signed with the Wave in 2023 at 15 years, 138 days old, becoming the youngest player to sign an NWSL contract at the time. Later that year, she set the league record as the youngest player to record an assist, reaching the milestone in a 2-1 win against Gotham FC on Aug. 19, 2023. In her rookie season, Barcenas helped Wave FC capture the 2023 NWSL Shield, the first trophy in club history.
At the international level, Barcenas has represented the United States at the U-14, U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-20 levels. She helped the U.S. U-17 Youth National Team win the 2024 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship, adding another major milestone to her young career.
